A 3 year old girl was lucky to survive a fall from a packed tourist train yesterday near Cairns, Australia. Shocked tourists say the girls father jumped from the moving train to rescue his daughter late yesterday.

It is thought the girl fell from the window of the Kuranda Scenic Railway about 2 km from Kuranda Station about 3.35pm yesterday afternoon. Emergency Services were called to the scene and the girl was taken to Cairns Base Hospital with minor abrasions and a fractured collarbone.

The fall was witnessed by nimerous shocked tourists. Witnesses said the victims father looked very shaken by the incident, however he declined to comment. Witnesses say the girl was in surprisingly high spirits just after the accident.

Queensland Rail declined to speculate on how the incident may have happened, although a full safety investigation will be launched. All the regular warnings regarding safety and not to put any part of ones body outside the train were made as usual.

The train returned to Kuranda Station before departing at 4.15pm and finally ending it’s journey 1 hour late at Freshwater Station. The railway operates 2 services daily between Cairns and Kuranda. The Kuranda Scenic Rail service has only been running for 8 weeks after a derailment in March, caused by a landslide dumping tonnes of soil and rock over the tracks injured 6 people.

When going on the Kuranda scenic Railway and the Skyrail Cableway I also advise visiting the Tjapukai Aboriginal theme Park, because here you will learn how to throw a spear , play the music sticks and enjoy Aboriginal dancing, which is great fun for all the family, in additional to learning about Indigenous traditions. Also make time to visit the markets.

Lizard Island:

Located about 250 kilometres from Cairns, Lizard Island is one of the hundrerds of islands located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Expert Travel Tip: I highly recommend Mike Ball Dive Expedition’s 3 night fly / dive expedition which starts with a stunning light aircraft flight along the barrier reef, landing at Lizard Island to meet up with the luxury vessel that takes you to some of the most pristine reefs anywhere. I had done numerous diving trips before I went on this expedition, and I was impressed by the sea life that I had never seen before like the beautiful lacy scorpion fish and the lion fish. And if you think you can’t dive then think again, an resort dive is perfect, as long as you are free from medical complaints such as heart problems, or respiratory ailments, and it is an enjoyable way to see the reef for all ages.

Uluru:

Situated approximately 350 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs, Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock is a natural rock formation that is situated in the Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park. Ayers Rock is believed to be thousand of years old and is a ‘must see’.
Expert Travel Tip: The best way to see Ayres Rock is to do a 3 day 2 night camping trip, so you can cover a much wider area, and so you can see Uluru in all it’s glory, at sunset and at sunrise. You can either camp, or stay in a luxury resort. This way you are also able to see Kings Canyon and the Olgas, and the colours of the landscape as they change, which is simply beautiful.

After 6 months of working and saving I finally travelled the East Coast to Cairns. After Sydney Cairns has to be one of the best places to party in Australia. It was so good I actually went there three times in the space of a year.The Great Barrier Reef from Cairns was just a bonus.

Cairns is where I did my PADI Advanced Open water dive course. I went with Pro Dive for a 4 day liveaboard dive course which was absolutely fantastic. I originally looked at diving with a company called Reef Dive but they seemed quite expensive and I had heard lots of good things about their learn to dive courses. Also after a buit more digging I found out they definately had one of the best reputations.

Their boat has been fully refurbished and has all the mod cons installed. It has very nice ensuite cabins which cater for 2-4 people, has a large dining area, communal lounge and even its own bar. Of course it also has a hot tub on the front deck to sit in and relax. The catering was above average and created in a rather well built galley, one of the best things they prepared was BBQ Coral Trout. Yumm.

The dive vessel is permanently moored at the Great Barrier Reef which would shift every day to different parts of the reef, which would either be done over night if a long way or early in the morning if a short distance. This was great as you get to experience a selection of reefs and have a truly unique dive holiday. They also had a fast transfer boat which takes you there and back which also allows you to spend as many days and nights aboard as you want.

I truly wouldn’t recommend anyone else to teach me to learn to Dive in Cairns but if you decide to look elsewhere please be very careful when choosing a dive school in Cairns as many dive schools use hotel pools for your theory part of the course.
